This module focuses on the care of adults with diabetes mellitus. Following the publication of the National Service Framework for diabetes it is imperative that those who care for adults with diabetes have an understanding of the evidence bases for practice, diagnostic criteria, pathology, treatment options, demography and epidemiology of the disease. Respect for the individuality of each patient and support for their adaptation to limiting, living with and treating both the long and short term complications of the disease process are core. Concepts such as empowerment and the psychological responses to both the shock of diagnosis and reaction to changing health status and body image are addressed. Attention is given to support of families and carers and cultural and ethnic differences in prognosis and disease prevalence.
