Global and Cultural Studies in Sport is in the Sport, Coaching and Physical Education degree recommended for the sociological strand of the degree. The sociological strand has been recently developed to try and attend to the socio-cultural aspects of sport. This module examines how sport is framed through the concept of cultural studies in sport, and how different sociological traditions interpret this concept and have applied it to the study of sport. Attention is given to the development of modern sport, the main global energies that characterize its structure, and the costs and benefits associated with these processes. Important issues within sports globalization discourse such as media, commodification, celebrity, identity, politics and culture are addressed. The module students to complete a poster presentation in pairs and write a short assignment relating to globalization. The module is structured over a 12-week period and included 8 lectures with 8 linked seminar sessions. The other 4 weeks were split into presentations, student led seminars, virtual (chat/wiki) engagement with course content and an independent study task in order to encourage deep learning to help develop real understanding of the theory underpinning the module.
