This module investigates a range of key issues and approaches in the sociology of work. It introduces a number of theories and concepts relevant for understanding work, employment and the labour market, whilst considering how we define work and the scope of activities we study as part of a sociological study of work. The module examines the social relations of production, technologies and skills in the workplace, questions surrounding power and conflict in the labour market, the changing nature of work and employment, and its relationship to different forms of social inequality, such as gender, ethnicity and social class. It also considers the characteristics of different types of work and their impact on individuals' lives.
