A module which examines the culture and ideology of publishing in terms of its development throughout the 20th century, and its contemporary practice. Different theories of print culture and critiques of the role of the publisher in society are reviewed, and there is an examination of ideological challenges to the culture of publishing. The module explores thematically the developing culture of publishing during the last century, through analysing major challenges to publishing culture as a result of social, political, economic and technological developments. The module is taught by means of lectures, seminars and presentations by historians and industry speakers, and there is an accompanying website to introduce the themes covered in the module.
