The reading and research module is designed to enable international postgraduate students to improve their skills in academic research, reading and analysis. They will develop and refine the skills required to locate appropriate reading sources through library catalogues, databases and the internet, and to assess the academic credibility, validity and usefulness of those sources. They will also learn to make informed decisions as what to read and what not to read for the purposes of seminar and writing assignments. They will practise intensive text comprehension skills, and become more aware of features such as text structure, purpose, style and tone. The development of vocabulary through greater awareness of collocation and usage is an important part of the module, and techniques for taking notes and summarising will be practised. There will also be a focus on critical thinking, reasoning and self-reflection.
