The module aims to enable students to analyse and assess key texts of modern political theory, focusing on the state and the international context. This will include analysis and assessment of classic texts, such as Hobbes' Leviathan and Rousseau's The Social Contract, appraising them historically, politically and philosophically. It will also involve the analysis of themes pertaining o modern political thought such as analysis of theories of natural rights, sovereignty and the social contract so that students will be enabled to identify and assess key aspects of early modern political thought.
