It enables students to evaluate critically competing theories and design alternatives applied in place-making and to assess the impact of urban form on different sectors of society. The module also challenges students to develop design alternatives for a specific location by taking into account political, socio-economic, development and other key factors important for achieving high quality places and public realm that are also sustainable. Emphasis will be placed on linking and applying micro- and macro- economic concepts to development processes, especially appraisal techniques used in land, residential and property development decision-making, particularly in Britain and continental Europe. It will develop a critical understanding of economic relationships between markets, key actors and fiscal and planning policy instruments in international settings.
