This module examines current approaches to urban design at the city wide scale. The module introduces four major concepts used in the analysis and understanding of the built environment - the responsive environments approach, townscape analysis, morphology and imaginability. Through these concepts the module seeks to link physical design with issues of visual perception, psychology, and an understanding of how the physical environment affects the way we feel. Additionally the specific design concepts of permeability, legibility, variety and vitality are addressed. Each method and concept is examined and then tested in the field as an analytical tool. On completion of the testing the concepts are used to produce a master plan and an outline design code for a case site.
