This module aims to develop understanding of music in historical and critical terms. In particular, the module will aim to place specific repertories in their original social, political or intellectual milieu, and will pay special attention to factors affecting music's composition, production and consumption. The music/topics chosen will reflect current staff specialisms and library resources, and within these constraints, the teaching programme will enable students to develop their own areas of interest. Skills in independent study (including choosing, designing and researching a viable topic) and the presentation of an academic essay (including bibliography, footnoting etc.) are developed in this module, so paving the way for U66099 (Music Dissertation or Project) as written dissertation work.
