This module focuses on the law and legal framework governing the international community. Examined in depth are the philosophical underpinnings of international law including the nature, origins and basis of international law. Also examined are the main sources of international law, including the importance of customs, traditions, treaties and international case precedents in interpreting international law. A special focus is given to the nexus between international and municipal law, including state responsibility and governmental obligations to other countries and the international community at large. The role, functions and powers of the United Nations is examined in depth focusing on the importance of the Security Council and its role as the central decision-maker of world affairs, including its role in promoting human rights and maintaining peace and security in this new global era. Issues relating to the law of international war and armed conflict are examined, as is peace keeping and humanitarian intervention. The International Court of justice is studied in relation to the judicial settlement of international disputes. The module builds on case studies to assist the learning experience.
