This module seeks to orient the student within the learning environment at Oxford Brookes and to establish a foundation of knowledge of the English legal system, and its relationship to the European Union. The overarching importance of human rights will be emphasised. A course of preliminary reading will prepare students for the lectures and place them in a position to consolidate and develop their knowledge further during the lecture programme. Self assessment exercises will be provided with the preliminary reading and will be returned to during the lecture programme as a method of confirming knowledge and understanding. In addition, the module seeks to start the development of legal research and writing skills. Students will be set an exercise to quickly establish a knowledge of the library holdings and training will be given by the subject librarian including on-line training sessions in the library training room on the use of electronic sources. Those students with particular needs in developing IT skills will be encouraged to approach the course leader or subject librarian on an individual basis for guidance. The course will be assessed and successful candidates will be allowed to proceed to the substantive subjects.
