This course introduces students to the broad discipline of Discourse Analysis. Areas for analysis include: general principles of Discourse Analysis, Conversation Analysis, Critical Language Studies, Forensic Linguistics, Intercultural Pragmatics and Multimodal Communication. Students are introduced both to the key theories of these sub-disciplines, as well as their relevance and application to real-world scenarios. By the end of the course, students will have a basic understanding of the areas of enquiry of both Discourse Analysis and its sub-disciplines, which will be extended and developed in the specialist modules in years 2 and 3.
