The topic of 'security' - what it is, how to achieve it, who should provide it, and even who and/or what should be secured - has long been contested by policymakers, the academic community, and members of civil society. The aim of this module is to provide a rich introduction to the major theoretical debates in the field of International Relations, looking beyond `bullets and bombs? to the range of practices that contribute to different forms, practices and understandings of security and insecurity. To this end, this module will review various contemporary issues from a variety of approaches. In addition to traditional approaches, this module will apply insights from critical, poststructural and feminist theory to contemporary security issues in order to examine the discursive and material practices involved in the making of our world - naturalizing the production of security for some and insecurity for others.
