This module will explore ways in which different subjects work with the broad concept of genre and the ways in which the evolution of genres can be associated with major shifts in major world events and or human tastes and sensibilities. It will begin with an overview of the shifting conceptual frameworks, which have questioned grand narratives- that have evolved historically and then show the need to understand the world differently through cultural moments which become influential forces on the production of culture, taste and fashion. It will then look at case-studies of key movements or genres across a range of disciplines to illustrate ways in which art responds to societal process.
