By the end of the module, students will understand the concept of nationhood as a site of contest, through engaging with questions such as: what is a nation and how is it defined? Is it the product of borders? Is it developed though the shared language and history of a people? Is it about laws and governance, or habits and customs? What happens when one or several of these characteristics change - does the nation cease to exist and/or can it return to a former state? In the first half of the module, students will develop an understanding of the different ways in which a nation develops and defines itself inwardly and in its relationship to others. In the second half of the module, students will develop an understanding of the ways in which the concept of a nation (including aspects such as borders and national identity) can be a site of contest and challenge. Students will also develop disciplinary skills in relation to the study of the topics covered.
