This module examines the way in which Britain has, over a long historical period, provided social welfare for its citizens. This allows for a sense not only of change, but also of long term continuities. Particular attention is paid to the operations of the Old Poor Law; the coming of the New Poor Law; the impact of late Victorian social investigation and social science; the eroding of the Poor Law by the Liberal Welfare Reforms and the 1929 Local Government Act; and the creation, in the 1940s, of the 'welfare state'. Opportunity is given to work in local archives.
