This module introduces you to the history of the United States within both a domestic and international setting and within the broader context of its gradual emergence as a leading international power, economically, militarily and politically. On completing this course you will be able to evaluate the principal debates that surround the emergence of American power and the ways in which the various institutions of the United States evolved throughout the period. You will also be able to identify key themes, particularly diplomatic, political, military, social, and economic changes in the American experience. The module develops and deepens the coverage of American history given in the level four modules Age of Revolution and Popular Protest and Rise of the Modern World. Together with the level four module Superpowers: an International History of the Cold War it prepares you for the level six module Advanced Study in the History of America.
