This module offers students a chance to begin to specialise in early modern political and cultural history. State building was one of the key developments of the early modern period. Governments and administrations, courts, representative bodies, legal systems and armies formed in a slow and often conflict-ridden process. The module will encourage students to see this process in a comparative perspective that includes Britain as well as major European countries. The module will develop students' skills in using primary sources. It will also introduce them to the most important debates of the historiography of state building.
