The module provides a broad overview of the period from 1450 to 1750, primarily focusing on Europe but also considering the European interaction with the wider world. It offers the chance to develop a long-running perspective on some of the main developments and debates in early modern history, such as the rise of the state and the military revolution. It also looks at the Ottoman expansion and the European encounter with Islam. Colonisation is considered both in terms of the European powers? government of swathes of the Americas and Asia, as well as their engagement with indigenous populations. Socio-cultural diversity within Europe is also considered through marginal/minority groups such as the Jews and witches. The module is the first in a sequence of level four History modules offering chronological coverage of the period 1450 to the present (the others are U67512 A People's History of Britain, U67514 World at War and U67511 Superpowers). It prepares you for several level five modules, in particular U67620 The Early Modern State and U67621 Conflict and Belief in the Early Modern World.
