The aim of this module is to offer an introduction to modern art through the study of a century of art practice in Britain, from the work of the Camden Town Group through to exponents of Brit Art such as Damien Hirst and Rachel Whiteread. Focusing particularly on painting and sculpture, the concern is to explore through case studies the ways in which artists in Britain sought to create specifically modern forms of expression, as well as the media (exhibitions, manifestos, books, little magazines), through which they promoted the resulting work. The course is taught through a mixture of classroom sessions and on-site visits, and students will explore a range of contemporary and secondary literature and, wherever possible, works of art at first hand. The module picks up chronologically from where the semester one module Making and Meaning in Western Art concludes, thus completing coverage at a basic level of the timeframe covered by the programme as a whole (1400 to the present day). It also introduces you to the study of modern art.
