This module focuses on the problem of how to design vehicle shapes that produce desirable or acceptable flow characteristics. Aerodynamic design for vehicles is evolving quickly and relies on a combination of: the physical understanding of the way that air flows behave; the use of experimental data and methods; the careful use of software packages, particularly computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software; and experience. This module will cover the application of CFD and experimental methods in the development of vehicles. On completion of this module students should be able to apply appropriate techniques in order to present a conceptual vehicle design and critically evaluate its performance. Students should also be able to assess the reasons for aerodynamic deficiencies in an existing vehicle shape and propose how recent developments within the field can be utilised to enhance aerodynamic performance.
