This module focuses on the problem of how to design vehicle shapes that produce desirable or acceptable flow characteristics. Current aerodynamic design for vehicles relies on a combination of: the physical understanding of the way that air flows behave; the use of experimental data and methods; the careful use of software packages, particularly computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software; and experience. This module will concentrate on the first two aspects with an introduction to CFD methods. On completion of this module students should be able to make a reasonable attempt at a low drag conceptual design, and should also be able to assess the reasons for aerodynamic deficiencies in an existing vehicle shape.
