Culture, Criticism, Literature 1 provides new undergraduate students of English with discipline-specific skills whilst managing the transition to university-level study through the encouragement of positive study, and self-management skills. Subject skills will include: active close-reading; critical synthesis and analysis; diverse research and information-gathering methodologies; the development of essay planning skills; ways to construct and support a persuasive argument and appropriate referencing and bibliography-building. These skills will be developed through seminar-based teaching, which will involve weekly close reading, discussion and critique, in tandem with writing and research exercises. Students will develop and practise the necessary academic skills required of a university level learner.
