The focus of this module is the practice and reflective development of the language teacher, focusing on the teaching of English in international and multilingual settings. The module aims to develop your understanding of the specific challenges, goals and issues of teaching English as an international language in the 21st century. Content includes: researching your own classroom, planning for learning, designing and evaluating teaching materials, formulating and evaluating the syllabus. It also focuses on how you can develop principled pedagogic approaches to language and explore the validity and effectiveness of these approaches for specific classrooms, contexts and student needs. Key debates such as the place of the mother tongue in the classroom, the place of grammar, and the contribution of new technologies are considered in the light of current research and development in the field.
