The aim of this module is to explore the linguistic description of English with a focus on 'language in use'. You will be asked to reflect on what constitutes English in linguistic terms and the factors influencing the varieties of English which might be taught in a language learning programme. You will examine the ways in which the English language is organised, both in written and spoken modes of communication, and discover which aspects of English usage are most important in different written and spoken genres. You will also investigate a variety of approaches, concepts and debates in the areas of analysing discourse, lexis, grammar, pronunciation, and pragmatics. The module will go on to look at how our understanding of the English language applies to teacher and learner knowledge in the classroom. The module is a core module in the TESOL pathway.
