This module explores previous and present developments within the field of educational neuroscience. The module will begin by exploring developmental changes that occur throughout our lifespan. Pre and postnatal development will be discussed initially, prior to investigating changes that occur throughout childhood, adolescence and beyond. A number of contemporary debates will be introduced in relation to the potential role of cognitive neuroscience within education. Such debates will include consideration of epistemological differences, methodological approaches and new ways of working. Current insights from the field of cognitive neuroscience will be explored in relation to a number of specific educational issues which have implications for educational practice. The module will engage with philosophical exploration and deliberation over the relation between mind, brain, self and body. The module will draw on a number of case study examples to encourage reflection, discussion and debate with regards to this complex and controversial field.
