This largely practiced-based module will offer students an opportunity to explore aspects of theatre, madness and the mind through the depiction of medicine and science (including its practitioners) or to engage with ideas from medicine and science in relation to dramatic and theatrical representation. Its central aim is to interrogate through practice the historical and theoretical links between madness, the mind, science and performance. Theatre and science are deeply interwoven in the European tradition, both in historical development and in strategies of representation. This module is designed to allow students to work in depth on the intersection between theatre, science and medicine. The module explores the representation and intersections between theatre, medicine and science thematically focussing on plays and ideas from the early modern period to the present day.
