This module will aim to introduce students to some of the major developments in British theatre writing and practice from 1950 to the present day. It will give students a chance to explore modern and contemporary British, largely text-based theatre through a series of lectures and seminars in a manner that is informed by relevant critical and socio-political debates. The module will also address the history and development of significant, publically-funded theatrical institutions in post-war Britain. The study of plays (as scripts and, where possible, in performance) will be informed by their exploration through appropriate critical frameworks including theatre censorship, state funding, feminist, queer and alternatives theatres, notions of nationhood, race and class.
