Project management involves the achievement of clear objectives, against a set timescale, and within agreed cost constraints. Projects range from the construction or refurbishment of facilities, through the introduction of new information systems, the opening of new business operating units, to the outsourcing of business processes. One common feature of many projects is that they depend on resources external to the organisation, and so the effective commercial management of contracts will often be a key to project success. In today's competitive business environment, many organisations are turning away from traditional, hierarchical management structures, and are increasingly building project teams into their organisational structures ? and, in some cases, structuring their whole business around project teams. There has been an acceptance of project management as a means of utilising resources more effectively and of enabling management costs to be controlled. This Module will help students to appreciate the principles, practices and techniques vital to the leadership and management of business projects. Students taking the Module will develop the skills necessary to deliver projects on time, within cost budgets, and to the required levels of quality.
