This module offers a comprehensive introduction to the basic principles of immunology and haematology. The roles and mechanisms by which the innate and immune systems protect us from infectious pathogens will be systematically examined, along with the efficacy of modern preventative and prophylactic vaccines. The module will provide an understanding of clinical immunology and how immunological research and knowledge is being applied to clinical problems and therapy. Additionally, the module will study the development and application of analytical techniques used in haematology for the diagnosis, management and treatment of disease, along with a consideration of transfusion science and the provision of compatible blood products.
