International conservation is supported by legislation and international monitoring but the persistence of species and habitats, especially those with are under the most threat is critically dependent on humans and their interactions with them. On a global scale many species and communities are endangered by exploitation or conflicts with the human population via development and conflicting space and resource requirements. A thorough understanding of the causes and consequences of these human activities and an analysis of ways of resolving these at an international scale is essential for maintaining biodiversity. The module analyses the importance and roles of legislation, trade and conflict resolution in resolving the biodiversity crisis. These themes are developed through the critical analysis of case studies, appraisal of our knowledge base concerning the scale of the crisis and consideration of the legislative processes.
