This module aims to develop the knowledge base, analytic skills and creative judgements needed to produce a resolved design, as well as the ability to integrate structural, environmental and constructional considerations, at both the strategic and detail levels, throughout the design process. The module is studio based being derived from the main design project.A successful technical study forms a seamless link with the main design project itself. It is a continuation of the design process down to the finest detail, giving material form to abstract space. The outputs consist of an illustrated and annotated report that includes the development of the design process from basic strategy to final result, together with a sample set of detail drawings. The technical content includes a detailed investigation into selected materials, and a study into connection between elements. Ultimately these studies will inform individual construction details. This module provides an opportunity to demonstrate how an understanding of environmental design can work in harmony with an architectural scheme, adding a powerful expression of the design aims through sensitive manipulation of light heat and sound. Alongside this an awareness of the impact of the physical and programmatic elements of the scheme on the wider environment need to be made explicit in a sustainability strategy. The module entails Structural Engineering teaching through the studio design work. Students will work on developing structural concepts into their projects, and test ideas for appropriate structural forms. The final drawings will include resolved structural schemes.
