The module aims to develop students understanding of India in historical, cultural, economic and political terms. The primary focus will be on ethnography and we will examine the ways in which both Indian and non-Indian anthropologists have sought to understand the diversity and culture of the subcontinent. This will be situated within the context of broader processes of social, political and economic change over long duration from colonialism to postcolonialism, neoliberalism and the various ways in which India has been represented, imagined and evoked.
